2023 John Fisher Memorial Speech
The John Fisher Memorial Speech is delivered each year by a respected Medical Educator reflecting on the past and present. Considering the further of GP Medical Education this year, Dr Hubert Van Doorn has agreed to share his insights and engage in questions and discussion afterwards.
Making sense of our senses
In this year’s John Fisher Memorial Presentation, the main conversation will be about perception.
We cannot live without perceiving, feeling, thinking, moving and engaging in the world.
But what is human perception?
How do we make sense of what we see sense?
As we tumble, or is it stumble? into a disembodied world of algorithms and scraped and clumped data, What will happen if we lose the sensate, sentient and somatic fabric of our perception?
What are our obligations to our registrar colleagues when we help them to develop their perceptual expertise?
The presentation will include a selection of insights from literary, psychological, educational and philosophical sources. Two stories of differing doctor-patient consultations will be narrated and then there will be time for conversation.
It’s a highlight of the GPME year and we’d love you to join us.
