September blog discussion - Dermatology

One of the requests we recently received as a future GP supervisor CPD topic after a recent workshop was a session on 'How to teach dermatology'. ReCEnT data demonstrates that the top clinical area for which registrars ask supervisors for help is skin, so this is clearly an important area. Historically I guess we have delivered teaching in 'educational' topics (feedback, RCA etc), with the occasional clinical sweetener mixed in. But I am not sure to the extent other RTOs have delivered sessions on 'how to teach' a clinical area, focussed less on the specific clinical entities but more on the overall approach to that type of problem (for skin, patterns and distribution etc). Does anyone know of a good framework that is amenable to a teaching session of 90 mins or so? This could be translated to other big ticket clinical areas like MSk and MH.

Hi Simon
In the past I have run sessions like this for supervisors and I believe a few of our MEs have done as well.
The key issues included are
1. How do you set the learning objectives- i.e., what do you want the registrar to learn when raising this topic? How do you want the registrar to be different as a result of teaching on this topic.
2. What options do you have in teaching this topic. Is it lecture, case based, case examples, discussion, registrar presentation. That is – getting them to think outside the square for options to teach the topic.
3. What resources would they use in such a session.
4. Then getting them in groups to design an education session- mainly focusing on the first 15 min. Prepare this and then run it with the group.
5. Have the group evaluate the impact of the session.
I am not sure why I don’t run them now, I think they are good for extending teaching approaches, while framing it in a clinical based situation. You can even give different clinical topics to each group to broaden the base of resources considered.
